HALO

HALO is our preferred tool for improving skin texture, elasticity and firmness. HALO, by Sciton, is a hybrid fractional laser that uses two different wavelengths of light at the same time. One of the wavelengths is ablative, which addresses the top layer of the skin. The second wavelength is non-ablative, which focuses on the underlying layers of the skin. Together, these dual wavelengths target many common ageing skin concerns with minimal downtime.

We are able to tailor the HALO settings to address the condition of your skin and your specific goals. We can independently adjust both the depth and the amount of skin treated by adjusting the ablative and non-ablative settings. Deeper level treatments may be needed for scarring or textural issues. For patients seeking a refreshed look with minimal downtime, a lighter treatment can be performed with great results. We use our knowledge, skill, and experience to make these custom adjustments. This allows us to make a real difference, giving our patients optimal results.

WHO IS A CANDIDATE?

Men and women wishing to address a variety of skin concerns, such as fine lines and wrinkles, brown spots, pore size, uneven texture, and turning back the clock are all good candidates for HALO.

  • Consultations are recommended for all patients prior to treatment.

  • You may need to stop, or start, certain medications or products prior to your HALO.

  • HALO is most effective on skin that is not tanned. You will need to avoid sun exposure, tanning, and self-tanning products for 1-2 weeks leading up to your laser treatment.

  • In addition to treating the face, HALO is frequently used on the neck, chest, and hands.  On occasion it is used on other areas of the body like forearms or legs, but the areas mentioned above are the most common and give the best result.

HALO is recommended for patients with the following skin conditions:
  • Fine lines and wrinkles

  • Sagging, or lax skin

  • Hyperpigmentation, sunspots and discoloration

  • Uneven texture

  • Enlarged pores

  • Scars (acne, traumatic or surgical)

  • Dullness

WHAT TO EXPECT

It is a good idea to wear comfortable clothing to your appointment as the procedure can take 30-90 minutes, depending on the area(s) being treated.

Metal eye shields are placed on top of your eyes to protect them from the laser.  In addition to topical numbing, we use a device that blows cold air on the area being treated. This combination of numbness and coolness ensures that you remain relatively comfortable throughout the procedure.

During the treatment you may feel a slight prickly heat as we roll the HALO hand piece across your skin.  You can expect to feel warmth in the treated area for 30-60 minutes after the procedure or slightly longer with deeper treatments.  Expect to feel some tightness, redness and even swelling for 1-2 days following your HALO.  By the 3rd day your skin may feel a bit like sandpaper, and you may see some “bronzing”. Bronzing is part of the healing process. Your body is pushing out the tiny cores of tissue created by the non-ablative wavelength. The extrusion of these tiny cores allows your body to heal by forming new collagen and elastin – to firm and tighten your skin. The tiny cores are called MENDS (microscopic epidermal necrotic debris) and they naturally slough off between the 4th and 6th day depending on the depth and intensity of your HALO treatment.

Some patients choose to add PRP (platelet rich plasma) to their HALO treatment. While not necessary, we believe adding PRP (additional cost) improves both your healing and results by approximately 20%. PRP is the platelet and serum component of your own blood (1 tube of blood is taken) and acts as an anti-inflammatory, facilitating wound healing and also promoting the production of more collagen. We massage the PRP into your skin at the completion of your HALO, allowing the peptides to deeply absorb through the tiny cores in your skin. Patients who opt for this add-on usually find a rapid cooling effect immediately after application.  We recommend that you not wash your face until the next morning if you choose this option. Allowing the PRP to remain on your skin overnight helps achieve the greatest absorption of peptides.

MAINTAINING YOUR HALO RESULTS

We want you to love your results and that requires a partnership. You can extend and enhance your results through good skincare, sunscreen, and the addition of some simple treatments.

  • For optimal results, we recommended 2-3 treatments performed 1 month apart if it is your first time having HALO.  This is not necessary for everyone, but a series of 3 treatments gets your skin to the best possible condition prior to beginning a maintenance program.

  • Most people will benefit from having a maintenance treatment done every 3-6 months.

  • Periodic light chemical peels  may be recommended to prep your skin for HALO, or to sustain and enhance your results.  Patients with extreme sun damage often benefit from a series of chemical peels prior to their first HALO treatment.  A series of peels provides “a clean slate” for the HALO light and allows for the greatest impact on darkened or reddened areas.

  • Medical grade skin care will also help maintain your results.  We always recommend a mineral sunscreen with zinc oxide and titanium dioxide. Elta MD has several options. We also like SkinBetter Tone Smart and ISDIN (which has an added DNA repair component).  Most of these brands offer both a tinted and non-tinted version.

  • SkinBetter’s Even Tone Correcting Serum and Alto Defense Serum are also great additions to your skincare regimen to help maintain your results. Both are available through our SkinBetter website.

HALO & BBL              – A PERFECT PAIR

The HALO on its own is a very effective treatment.  However, when paired with BBL, which unlike the HALO, is considered a light treatment that targets browns and reds, the results are even more astounding.  Having a BBL treatment performed just prior to HALO has many benefits, including:

  • helps treat redness

  • brings pigmented areas to the surface

  • allows HALO to create a direct pathway for pigmentation to release from the surrounding epidermis

  • stimulates collagen and elastin production

Social downtime is around 7 days but is well worth it.  The HALO/BBL combination treatment promotes better light reflection from your skin giving what is known as the “HALO glow”.
