Benefits of Toxins
WHAT ARE TOXINS?
Toxins, also known as injectable neurotoxins, are commonly used to relax tiny muscles in the face that cause wrinkles, think crows feet and frown lines. Many people recognize Botox as the most common neurotoxin in the United States. However, there are others including: Dysport, Xeomin, Jeuveau, and the newest Daxxify.

These injectables are called “toxins” because at their base they are all botulinum toxin type A. Each brand of toxin has a very slightly different preparation or protein blend, from which they garner claims that their brand is: faster, longer-lasting, slower-spreading, etc. Dr. Cyndi Yag-Howard has experience with all the neurotoxins named but finds that Dysport and Botox give the fastest, most predictable, and longest-lasting results.

The neurotoxin market is rapidly growing in the US. Estimated to finish 2023 at $5 billion annually, the market is expected to grow to $8.4 billion by 2028¹. This growth is due to increasing acceptance of cosmetic services and a very high (95%²) patient satisfaction level.

-
When artfully injected, toxins do a wonderful job of smoothing expression lines in the face: laugh-lines, frown-lines, and crows feet.

-
They are relatively quick acting and moderately long-lasting. Most toxins begin to take effect in 4 days and reach full effectiveness between the 10th and 14th day. Their relaxing effect begins to fade around the 4th month and is usually gone in 6 months.

-
Continued toxin treatments usually offer an extended result as the relaxed muscles tend to weaken over years of treatment. Thus, the tiny muscles that make the lines are not as strong and are not able to create that same deep furrow they created before the toxin treatments.
-
Most often toxins are priced by the unit. So, while one person may need 38 units, another may need 84 units. It all depends on how much toxin is needed to relax the targeted muscles and the number of areas being treated. Often men need a greater amount of toxin because the muscles of their face are stronger than those of women.

-
Because toxins are injected in very small units, you and your provider can decide how much movement you want. Some people want to be “frozen”; however, most people prefer a lessening of the lines and creases. They want some of their expression lines, they just don’t want to look tired and wrinkly.

BENEFITS OF TOXINS
WHO IS A CANDIDATE?
Almost anyone wanting to look more refreshed and happier is a perfect toxin candidate.

Traditionally, toxins were injected to give patients a refreshed, younger look. By smoothing lines, creases, and a downturned mouth patients looked younger, well-rested, and happier. A study from 2009 showed that toxin patients who looked happier actually felt happier!³

While expression lines are the most commonly treated areas, our advanced injectors frequently inject other areas, including:

-
Above the brows to create a mini-brow lift
-
Around the mouth to lift downturned corners, called a Nefertiti lift
-
In the chin to smooth “orange peel” textured skin
-
At the corners of the jaw (masseters) to reduce harsh angles and re-shape the jaw line

Prevention of lines and creases is more common now than it was a decade ago. People in their 20s and 30s sometimes opt to begin toxin treatments to prevent lines and creases from forming.
WHAT TO EXPECT
Botox and Dysport are often the treatment that brings a patient to a cosmetic provider for the first time. Toxins are attractive to “first-timers” because they are relatively inexpensive, the effect is not permanent, the satisfaction level is very high, and the injections are practically painless.

Once we have discussed your history and goals, we will take photos and clean your face. Injections are done with a tiny needle that is not much wider than a human hair – that is why topical anesthetic is not needed. You may feel the smallest pin prick with each injection. And you may be asked to make faces like “frown hard” and “smile big”. This allows your provider to see exactly where to place the toxin. The injection portion of your visit will only take about 10 minutes.

Once your injections are completed, you will have small red, raised dots wherever the toxin was injected – some people call these “bee stings” because it resembles an insect sting. These resolve over the next few hours as your body absorbs the injected toxin. You will be given post-care instructions advising you not to apply ice, massage the injected areas, or exercise for 24 hours. Our post-care instructions help ensure the injected toxin remains in place until it is naturally absorbed by your body.
DYSPORT PLEASE
We want you to love and appreciate your results. We’ve learned this often requires a partnership. If it’s your first toxin visit with us, we will likely undertreat and ask you to return in 2 weeks for a dose adjustment. We would rather add a bit more in two weeks, than have you experience too much. Additionally, we rigorously document each unit and its placement so that once we have your exact dosing, we can repeat it over and over again.
TOXINS & FILLERS:
A PERFECT PAIR
Toxins alone provide wonderful results, but pairing with a filler like Restylane or Versa gives the best and most natural result. Toxins work on expression lines formed by muscles and fillers work on deeper lines and folds caused by gravity and time. Toxins work synergistically with fillers.
