Q&A with Dr. John DeNigris

Q. Why am I losing hair?

A. There are many causes of hair loss. The most important thing is to rule out that the hair loss is leading to scarring. While scarring alopecia is relatively uncommon, it is characterized by the permanent destruction of your hair follicles, which are replaced with scar tissue, creating bald spots. Since scarring hair loss is permanent, addressing the cause quickly is critical. The majority of hair loss is due to genetics, and many treatments are available to slow or reverse the hair loss. I believe it is important for anyone with significant hair loss to be seen by a dermatologist. Many treatments are available and most hair loss can be improved especially if caught early.
